The Silver Crest School, located on Sydney Road in the Town of Pine Valley, was like most rural, one-room schools. Someone had the responsibility to pump the water from the well and bring it into the building, where it was poured in a heavy crock-type dispenser that seemed to sweat all the time. Heat was supplied while others had to clean the ashes.
The photo below was taken around 1907. The Silver Crest School later was destroyed by a tornado and was then rebuilt. The photo was loaned to the Press by Vera Shumway (now deceased) of Neillsville, who is one of the students in the picture.
