Castner, George (28 Apr 1864 - 11 Jan 1929)
George Castner, a progressive farmer of the Township of Loyal, was born on the farm of his father, John Castner, in the Township of Loyal, Clark County, Wisconsin, April 28, 1864.
George remained on the parental farm until reaching the age of 14 years, when being a strong and energetic boy, he went to work in the lumber camps.
His strength and vigor increased with exercise; he developed into a strong and hardy man and today showed the effects from the hard work he did in lumber camps, in railroad construction work, and on the farm.
He was first married to Miss Lillian Nutting, Randolph, Dodge County, Wisconsin in the year of Aug. 23, 1886. Immediately after his marriage Mr. Castner with wife , located on a wild tract of land consisting of 160 acres in section 27, Township of Loyal, beginning their improvements with a team of horses, aside from which they had nothing but their hands.
There they resided for 9 years Mr. Castner putting up buildings and having 55 acres cleared when leaving the farm. During this time he was also engaged as a contractor in logging industry, his camps being located on Black River and near Rhinelander, Wisconsin. After lumbering he engaged in railroad contracting for 17 years in various places, including Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana and British Columbia. He returned from British Columbia 1907 and purchased from his father, John Castner’s homestead where George was born, which was then owned by Daniel Mack, his maternal grandfather. On this farm he built a ten room house and erected a barn 36x100.
George Castner resided upon this farm until January 11, 1929, passing away at 11:00 P. M. at the age of 64 years, 8 months, 13 days.
His first wife, Mrs., Lillian Castner died Dec. 31, 1895 leaving four children: John, Cora, Ethel and Frona. Three daughters all have been school teachers. Mr. Castner, married for his second wife, Nettie Wicker, Jan. 28, 1904, of Colby, Wis. Of Mr. Castner’s second marriage, three children have been born: Jeanette, Edith and Valda. Mr. Castner leaves 7 children: Cora Castner, Washington D. C., John Castner, Mrs. Ethel Boe and Mrs. Ray Kauffman of Loyal, Jeanette, Edith and Valda of Loyal. He leaves three brothers, Albert, Alfred and Daniel of Loyal and two sisters, Albina of Rapid River, Mich., and Mary of Bellingham, Washington.
Funeral services were held yesterday at 1:00 P. M. at the house and 2:00 P. M. at the M. E. Church here. Rev. Wilson Mallory of Granton officiated, assisted by Rev. G. C. Wadding. Interment took place in the Loyal cemetery. He was a devoted husband and father. His qualities as a friend and neighbor were evidenced by the high regard and confidence in which he was held. Their heartfelt sympathy goes out to the bereaved family and relatives.
