Short, Jane Ann (28 Sept. 1850 - 5 Oct. 1932)

Jane Ann Kennedy, daughter of James and May Kennedy, was born at Cambridge, Wis., Sept. 28, 1850 and died at her home in Washburn township on Wednesday evening, Oct. 5th, 1932, aged 82 years and seven days.

Cambridge was her home from birth until she was 23 years of age. Here she attended the public school, became a member of the Presbyterian church and received the home training that fitted her for life.

It was at Cambridge on July 19, 1873 that she was married to Andrew Short, who was her companion for nearly 58 years, and who preceded her in death in April 1931.

Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Short moved to Clark County and settled on land in Washburn township, which became their farm and home. This part of the county was little more than wilderness at this time, offering nothing more than mere trails through the woods for those who were traveling. These conditions made it difficult for the early settlers to get supplies, and challenged these hardy pioneer people who never knew defeat. Through hard work and much sacrifice, gradually the land was cleared, the soil tilled and there came into existence this community, which has taken the name Shortville.

The Shorts, short only in name but not in deed, were also pioneers in spiritual efforts. Largely through their interest and enterprise, the Shortville Church came into being, and many are the neighbors and friends of these people who testify to their fine Christian spirit, through these many years of a long and useful earthly life, who mourn their going, and rejoice in the faith they have that these friends have entered into the "better country" to receive their rewards and enjoy their heavenly home.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Short has been blessed with three children, James of the town of Washburn, Ralph on the home farm, and May, Mrs. Walter Bell of Janesville, Wis.

Mrs. Short is survived by these three children, two half brothers, Dan Scott of Cambridge, Wis., and W. A. Scott of Rapid City, S. D., seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the home in Washburn at 1:15 on Saturday afternoon and from the Methodist - Presbyterian church in Neillsville at 2 o'clock, the Rev. P. B. White officiating. Burial took place in the local cemetery.

People from other cities attending the services were Dan Scoot, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Scott of Cambridge, Wis., Mrs. Ed Altpeter, Ft. Atkinson, Wis., and Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Wallace and daughter of Janesville, Wis.
