GEN. MORGAN'S KIN WRITES

Some years ago an article was published in the Neillsville Press telling of the ride taken by Attorney R. F. Kountz when a boy, with Gen. John Morgan, the noted Confederate cavalry leader, when Morgan and his men invaded the state of Ohio during the Civil War. Mr. Kountz was only a boy at the time, but was taken along by Morgan's forces to show them the road. The Press account was later re-published in the Wisconsin Farmer, and more recently a different write-up was published in the Milwaukee Journal.

Some weeks ago Mr. C. H. Plummer of Kewaunee, Wis., who is interested in pea canning machinery, was here on business and called at the Press Office. He stated that the had been traveling in the South some time previously and had met Brooks Morgan, a nephew of Gen. John Morgan, who was quite interested in knowing that a Wisconsin man is still living who had ridden with his distinguished uncle on his famous raid though Ohio.

The following is an extract written by Brooks Morgan to Mr. Plummer and forwarded by him to the Press. It May be of interest to all who know of Mr. Kountz's thrilling ride with the famous Gen. Morgan:

May 5, 1932.

Mr. C. H. Plummer, Kewaunee, Wis. Dear Plummer:

"Mr. Kountz might have known my father, as he was one of the youngsters that helped to keep General John Morgan's Cammand supplied with horses.

He (my father) was the youngest of six sons, all of whom were in the army, except my father. He was made to remain at home and look after his mother and sisters, but having the usual Morgan disposition he had to be somewhere on the fighting line.

Many funny stories are told about the way he "swiped" horses from the Federal Soldiers that were camped in Kentucky and turned them over to General Morgan's Command."
