Anason, Charlene (Joins PCA - 1984)

Charlene Anason has joined the staff of the Production Credit Association’s Neillsville branch office.

Anason is assuming the duties of the Neillsville branch Agrifax technician and assistant to the branch secretary. This position was previously held by Mary Dux.

She is a native of Neillsville. Anason grew up on a dairy farm and is a graduate of Neillsville High School, where her major course was business. Her employment since high school has been with the Neillsville Bank.

Trimberger, Rhonda Lee (Engagement - 1984)

A June 30 wedding date has been set for Rhonda Lee Trimberger and Donald McKaig. The parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Trimberger of Neillsville and David McKaig and Lillian Stephens, both of Edgerton. The bride-to-be is a 1982 graduate of Neillsville High School and the groom-to-be is a 1980 graduate of Edgerton High, both are students at UW-La Crosse.

Neillsville United Methodist Church (Spec. Services - 1984)

Three young people were confirmed and received into membership at the United Methodist Church Sunday. They are Jody Kluckhohn, Lori Pflughoeft and Shannon Rose.

Three adults were also received into membership—Mr. and Mrs. Richard Clark and Mary Ann Buker.

Jess Joseph Clark was baptized. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Clark.

Geary, Mildred Irene (1 February 1907 – 8 March 1984)

Mildred Irene Geary, 77, of Curtiss passed away at her home on the evening of March 8. An apparent heart attack was the cause of death. The deceased’s late husband, Clarence Geary, was a long-time Clark County Board of Supervisors member.

The deceased Mildred (nee Nicks) was born on February 1, 1907, in Kunaranzi, Minn. On October 6, 1924, she married Clarence Geary in Curtiss ceremonies. The couple farmed in the Town of Hoard until moving to Curtiss in 1951. They then purchased the Schwandt Grocery and ran it as the Geary Grocery until 1979. She was a member of St. Paul’s Congregation, its women’s group and the Curtiss Community Club.

Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. Clifford (Betty) Nenzel of Stanley and Dorothy Geary of Curtiss; a son, William, Baraboo; a brother, Walter Nicks, Stetsonville; two sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Faye) Stephens of Pharr, Tex., and Mrs. Charles (Wava) Telin of Cedarburg; seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband (June 25, 1983); a sister, Elsie; and a son, Thomas, who died in infancy.

Funeral services for Mrs. Geary were held on Monday, March 12, from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Curtiss with the Rev. Jeffery Johnson officiating, and burial was made in the Curtiss’ Pine Hill Cemetery, with the Maurina Funeral Home of Owen in charge of arrangements.

Raine, Elsie V. (30 October 1885 - 11 March 1984)

The last surviving member of the first graduating class of the old Neillsville High School died in Madison on Sunday afternoon, March 11. The deceased, Elsie V. Raine, 98, was a 1906 graduate of Neillsville High School and was a member of the first class to graduate from the old high school building which was located at the corner of Fourth and Court Streets. She was the last survivor from that class.

The deceased was born on October 30, 1885, in the Town of Grant to Emil and Lena (Steuerwald) Jahr. She received her early education in rural schools and then attended and graduated from Neillsville High School. She then taught in area schools for three years.

On April 14, 1909, she married Fred Raine in Town of Grant ceremonies. The couple then farmed in the Town of Grant for a few years. In 1913, they moved into Neillsville where her husband was employed by the Kleckner Elevator. In 1937, Mr. Raine died. Mrs. Raine remained in Neillsville until 1945 when she moved to Appleton to live with her daughter. They moved to Madison in 1975, where she remained until her death. She was a member of Madison’s Bethany United Methodist Church.

Surviving her are two daughters, Lela and Mrs. Gale (Zona) VandeBerg, both of Madison; a sister, Myra Garrett, Wilmington, Delaware; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruby Shedden, Neillsville; three grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death, besides her husband, by three brothers, Otto, Marvin and Walter.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, March 13, from the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville with the Rev. Howard Ott of the United Methodist Church officiating, and the burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Scharf, Mamie (3 October 1909 – 7 March 1984)

Mrs. Harold (Mamie) Scharf, 74, of Rt. 1 Granton, passed away on Wednesday evening, March 7, in Neillsville Memorial Home.

The deceased Mamie (nee Gardner) was born on October 3, 1909, in the Town of Fremont. She received her education in Granton area schools and from Stevens Point Normal. She later taught schools in the Granton area for 42 years. She married Harold Scharf in June 27, 1950, at Granton ceremonies.

Surviving her are two brothers, Charles of Granton and Russell of Marshfield; and a sister, Mrs. Douglas (Dorothy) Crandall, Granton. She was preceded in death by her husband on December 28, 1980; three brothers; and four sisters.

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, March 19, from Zion American Lutheran Church in the Town of Grant. The Rev. Maynard Stokka officiated, with the burial made in the church cemetery. The Gilbertson Funeral Home of Granton was in charge of arrangements.

Schuld, Leander F. (15 January 1901 – 8 March 1984)

Leander F. Schuld, 83, a longtime caretaker at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville, died on Thursday morning, March 8, in Neillsville Memorial Hospital. He resided at 2103 Black River Rd., Neillsville.

The deceased was born on January 15, 1901, in Loyal to Simon and Theresa (Koch) Schuld. He received his education in public and parochial schools and then farmed with his parents in the Town of York. On May 11, 1920, he married Julia Weber in Rozellville ceremonies. The couple, for the next 25 years, farmed on the home farm. In 1945, they moved to Neillsville where he was employed by St. Mary’s Catholic Church and School, working as a janitor and caretaker. He held that position for 25 years. He later worked as a janitor for the Neillsville Foundry for a couple of years until retiring. He was a member of St. Mary’s parish and the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving him besides his wife, are four sons, Al of Wauconda, Ill., Romaine of South Milwaukee, Gerald of Crystal Lake, I(ll., and David of Wis. Rapids, and three daughters, Mrs. Louie (Josephine) Schmidt of Eau Claire, Mrs. Norbert (Margaret) Schlegelmilch of Neillsville and Mrs. Wayne (Marilyn) Miller of Libertyville. Ill. Joining them is a sister, Angeline Frei, Neillsville, 26 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death was a daughter Eleanore and four sisters, Martha, Rosie, Tillie and Nora.

Funeral services were held on Saturday morning, March 10, from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville with the Rev. Joseph Henseler officiating, with burial made in the parish cemetery. The Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Short, Arthur (17 May 1893 – 13 March 1984)

The last surviving Short brother, who gave the area neighborhood of “Shortville” its name, died on Tuesday, March 13. The deceased is Arthur Short, 90, who passed away in an Arpin convalescent center one day after admission.

The deceased was born on May 17, 1893, in the Town of Washburn to John and Jane (McGinnis) Short. After receiving his education in Washburn Schools, he remained there to farm. On December 18, 1918, he married Elsie Neitzel. In 1925, the couple moved to a Town of Lynn farm. Mr. Short for a time served as an assessor for the Town of Lynn and also worked for the county’s ASCS office.

Surviving him, besides his wife, are two daughters, Elaine Short of Granton and Mrs. Audrey Troemner of DeForest, and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, March 17, from Zion American Lutheran Church in the Town of Grant. The Rev. Maynard Stokka officiated, with burial made in the Windfall Cemetery. The organist was Jay Parker and vocalist was Marie Stanley. Pallbearers for the service were Edwin, Ervin, Gary and Allen Sternitzky and Lee and William Ganther. The Gilbertson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Wagner, Frederick L. “Fritz” (6 September 1914 – 19 March 1984)

Frederick L. “Fritz” Wagner, 69, of Rt. 2 Neillsville, who was a Pine Valley farmer, township worker and local plumbing worker, died on Monday, March 19, in Neillsville Memorial Hospital.

The deceased was born on September 6, 1914, in the Town of Pine Valley to August and Ernestine (Sauerberg) Wagner. He received his education in township schools and also at St. John’s Lutheran School in Neillsville. He was also employed in the Neillsville area for a short time and then moved to Milwaukee.

On July 1, 1939, he married Lucille Kelling in Milwaukee ceremonies. After their marriage, Wagner was employed by the Ampco Metal Tool and Die Company until 1951 when the couple moved to Neillsville. He farmed in the Town of Pine Valley, operated the road grader for the township for many years and then worked for Medicke Plumbing for about 15 years. He retired in 1977. After his retirement he continued to do plumbing on a part-time basis.

Surviving him, besides his wife, are five sons, Fred, Jr., Richard and David, all of Neillsville, Phillip of Phoenix, Az., and John of Houston, Tex.; two daughters, Mrs. Val (Joyce) Kuzjak of Marshfield and Mrs. Val (Joanne) Sarafanov, of Elk River, Minn., and thirteen grandchildren. Joining them are three sisters, Meta Oppermann of Milwaukee, Erna Richardson of Neillsville and Ruth Andrews of St. Paul, Minn., and two brothers, Herbert and Martin, both of Neillsville. He was preceded in death by four brothers.

Funeral services were to be held today (Thursday, March 22) from the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville with the Rev. Lloyd Hohn of the Assembly of God officiating, with burial to be made in the Neillsville City Cemetery. (The body was to lie in state on Wednesday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and again on Thursday until the time of services at the funeral home.)
