New School Read at Unity

Unity, Wis. - The new unity Elementary school to be put into use here next Monday, will replace a building which has served several generations of area children since its construction about a half century ago.

In utmost contrast to the antiquated and venerable old school is the handsome, modern and strictly utilitarian appearance of the new school with its four classrooms principal's office and a multi-purpose room for physical education, school lunches and other school activities.

The classrooms are designed with large window areas and fluorescent lighting to provide greater light intensity. Each room has ample space for instructional purposes. All the student desks and most of the other furnishings are new.

The school serves District No. 1, comprising the village of Unity and Brighton, and has a current enrollment of 85 students. The district also is a part of Colby Union Free High School district, where students of the area receive their secondary education.

Principal of the Unity School is William Gilles, who also instructs the seventh and eighth grades. Other faculty members are Miss Marlene Spangler, fifth and sixth grades; Miss Marcia Guenther, third and fourth grades, and Miss Eileen Johnson, first and second grades.

The estimated cost of the new school and equipment is $80,000. The general contract was held by the Widner Construction Co. of Medford. Other contractors were Maurer Supply Co., Marshfield, Pete Wilde, Colby, and Schmidt Co. of Edgar. Fixtures for the building were supplied by the Lulloff Furniture Co. of Colby.

The old school building adjoining the new structure will be dismantled.
