LITTLE GIRL DIED IN TRAGIC MISHAP

Wind Traps Victim Beneath Cover of Watering Tank

Pinned beneath the heavy wooden cover of a cattle watering tank which held her face and arms beneath the surface of the water, little Mildred Gard, 5 years old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Gard, farmers five and a quarter miles northeast of the city, met a tragic death Monday afternoon. The tank contained a few small first and it is believed the youngster was leaning over the edge watching them swim when a guest of wind slammed down the cover and trapped her.

The death of Mildred marks the second time within a few years that death in a violet form has visited the Gard family, a 3 year old daughter having been fatally burned in an accident about 10 years ago while they were living in Illinois.

Mildred's predicament was discovered when Mr. Gard heard a commotion at the tank after he had turned out his house to water about 4 p.m. Investigating he found the animals trying to raise the tank cover with their noses and upon approaching nearer saw the body of his daughter suspended down the side of the tank. The father made frantic efforts to revive the child and Dr. M. C. Rosekrans was summoned, but all attempts to bring back life were unavailing.

It is thought the accident occurred only a short time before Mr. Gard found the body as the child had been missed only a few minutes. A strong hook had been made to keep the tank cover up and it is a mystery how it got loose, permitting the wind to blow it over.

Mildred was an exceptionally bright and winsome little child. She was born March xx, 1928, and is survived by her parents, two brothers, Bobbie 13, and John 15, and a sister, Mrs. Lloyd Buettner.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1:30 p.m., at the home and at 2 p.m. at the Schiller Funeral home. Rev. G. W. Longenecker will officiate. Burial will be in the Neillsville Cemetery.
