Thirty-seven Years Ago

In the attic of the John P. Kintzele home, "Romadka Homestead," last week was found a bundle of old newspapers of the fall and winter of 1896, among them copies of the Republican and Press, Weekly Wisconsin and Chicago Tribune. As a matter of history, some excerpts from these papers May be published from time to time in the Press.

The following items are from the local page of the Republican and Press of Dec. 31, 1896:

H. C. Rand and Harry Mead of Longwood visited the county seat Tuesday.

Mrs. Tifft and daughter Mabel went to Spring Green last week to visit relatives during the holidays.

Joe Dillman and wife went to Milwaukee Saturday for a visit with friends at their former home.

Blanche Ring came home from Milwaukee Thursday to visit her parents and friends during the holidays.

Wm. Zassenhaus, our present Register of Deeds, spent Christmas with his family at his farm home in Green Grove.

Register of Deeds elect, Chas. Cornelius, is at present confined to his bed with a sever attach of rheumatism.

Eddie French returned home from Watertown, Dakota, to visit his mother and other relatives during the holidays.

Hi Goddard of La Crosse, a prominent logger, visited this place Tuesday in the interest of his logging business.

Ernest O'Neill, Don MacMillan, and Miss Bessie King came home from Madison Thursday to spend the holidays with their parents.

Miss Myra Dean of Greenwood arrived in this city Monday and is the guest of Miss Ollie Huntzicker. She attended the Leap Year ball.

Miss Lillie Dangers, who is teaching school in West Bend, came home to spend the holiday vacation with her parents, B. Dangers and wife.

Frank Glass, who is employed in the furniture factory at Centralia, arrived home in time to spend Christmas with his wife and other relatives.

Victor Huntzicker's new bank will not be opened before the middle of January, owing to the delay in getting the building which he is occupy, ready.

Charlie Lee is no longer on Hewett street selling peanuts by the peck; he has gone out of the peanut and candy business, and has sold out of packed up what remained. Just what he intends to do in the future we are not permitted to say.

For several weeks it has been almost impossible for anyone to reach the Press office on Wall Street, owing to the obstructions in the pathway caused by the remodeling of the O'Neill building, but now the obstructions have been removed, our sidewalk re-laid, and our friends can once more call upon us.

Dr. Lacey, who has been in practice in this city with Dr. Esch for a number of years, sold out his practice to a doctor Conroy of Chicago, and last week took his departure for Arizona, *** rest of the copy is cut off
