Airman Mark D. Edblom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Edblom, Colby, has been
assigned to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, after completing Air Force training.
During the six weeks at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, he studied the Air Force
Mission, organization and customs, Edblom will receive specialized instruction
in civil engineering.

Army Pvt. Kert L. Boie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Boie, Thorp, has completed
basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

Bakken, Elmer (24 September 1903 - 02 December 1983)
Services for Elmer B. Bakken, 80, of Northwood, Iowa, were December 5 at the
First Lutheran Church in Northwood. The Rev. Mark Graudal officiated and burial
was in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.
Pallbearers were Jon Lindner, Matt Anderson, Todd, Jeff, Anthony and Greg
Bakken, Daniel Moen and Brian.
Mr. Bakken died December 2 at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.
He was born September 24, 1903 in Worth County, Iowa, to the late Mr. and Mrs,
Ole (Emma Mandt) Bakken. He married Eleanor Clausen August 31, 1929 in Albert
Lea, Minnesota.
He farmed in the Northwood area until 1957 and then moved to Wisconsin and
worked for Spencer Trailer Co., Spencer, and the Loyal Canning Co., in Loyal. He
moved back to Northwood in 1973.
A member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, Mr. Bakken is survived by
his wife; seven daughters, Mrs. Richard (Bonnie) Lindner of Loyal, Mrs. David
(Carolyn) LaPointe of Marshfield; Mrs. Richard (Mavis) Elwell of Woodland Park,
Colorado, Mrs. Lyle (Jermane) Peterson of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mrs. Richard
(Marvel) Moen of West Dundee, Illinois, Mrs. Dallas (Jeanette) Anderson of
Rosemount, Minnesota and Jeannie Bakken of Richfield, Minnesota; one sister,
Mrs. Oliver (Alice) Lokken of Albert Lea; 27 grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
He was survived by
three sons, Duane, Jerry and Steven, all of Northwood, Iowa.
He was predeceased by three sons, Eldrin, Kenneth and Leon, three brothers and
one sister.

Johnson, Edward H. “Ed” (27 November 1931 – 25 April 2023) With Flag
In Loving Memory of Edward H. Johnson, age 91, of Colby, passed away peacefully
on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Clark County Rehabilitation & Living Center under
the tender care of Heartland Hospice with loving family by his side.
Ed was born on November 27, 1931, in Ladysmith to Oswald and Agnes (Krisik)
Johnson. He attended grade school in the Town of Cedar Rapids and graduated from
Glen Flora High School in 1950. Ed was selected to serve in the United States
Army and served in the Korean War from November 29, 1951, to November 19, 1953.
Ed was the recipient of the military Bronze Star Medal for his acts of valor
during combat.
On August 11, 1956, Ed was united in marriage to the love of his life, Rose
Marie Kuduk at St. Augustine Catholic Parish in Ingram. They lived in Milwaukee,
from 1956-1960 and Ed worked at Inland Steel. They moved to the Colby area in
1960, where they purchased a dairy farm in the Town of Colby. Together they
farmed, raised three children, built a home and enjoyed polka dancing. Ed
retired from farming in 2006.
Ed enjoyed working on the farm and woodworking. He had a knack for fixing
things. He also enjoyed time spent with farm animals. He was an avid journalist.
Later in life he enjoyed planting trees, mowing the lawn and riding his
3-wheeler. Ed was a hardworking, loving and compassionate husband, father,
grandfather and great grandfather who will be deeply missed.
Ed is survived by his wife Rose of 66 years; his sons, Steve (Cathy) Johnson of
Colby, James (Tammy) Johnson of Pittsville and daughter, Beverly (Steve) Halopka
of Medford; his grandchildren: Kevin Johnson, Jessica (Adam) Huston, Andy
(Ashley) Halopka, Kelsey Halopka, Jordyn Halopka; his step grandchildren: Nate
Fitense, Jason Fitense, Ryan (Marcy) Fitense and six great-grandchildren. He is
further survived by family friend, Donna Fitense; his siblings: brother, Robert
Johnson and sisters, Virginia Kopacz, Marian (Richard) Tobias and Margaret
(Mike) Scrivner; nieces and nephews.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents; twin brother William “Bill” Johnson;
in-laws; four brothers-in-laws and two sisters-in-laws.
A public visitation with be held on Friday, May 12, 2023, from 10:30 A.M. until
11:30 A.M. at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Colby. A service
will be held at 11:30 A.M. Interment to follow at the Colby Cemetery with
Military Honors provided by the Colby VFW Post #2227. Family and friends are
welcome to attend a reception luncheon at St. Mary's Catholic School gymnasium
after funeral service.
If desired, memorials in Edward’s name can be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic
School or to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

DORCHESTER - Edward L. Suder, 44, Route 1, Dorchester, was found dead about
Wednesday morning in a pickup truck near his home. The truck had run off the
road and it is believed he had collapsed at the wheel. An autopsy was ordered to
determine the cause of death.
Services will be Friday at St Peter's Lutheran Church. The Rev. David Maki will
officiate. Burial will be in the Abbotsford Cemetery. Visitation at the Maurina
Funeral Home in Abbotsford.
He was born April 7, 1939 in Price County. He graduated from Abbotsford High
School and received a bachelor of science degree in education from University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
He taught elementary education in Medford area schools and in Stetsonville. He
farmed in the Town of Holton and since October 1978 farmed in the Town of
Mayville.
He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church; the National Farmers
Organization; and the National Rifle Association.
He married Louetta Lavin Aug. 26, 1961. She survives along with one son, Scott
at home; his father, Edward Suder Sr. of Curtiss; his mother Ida Suder of Colby;
and one brother, Gordon of Tomahawk.

WITHEE - George J. Baehr, 95, Route 1, Withee, Town of Hixton, died Wednesday
night at his home.
Services will be Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Withee. The Re. Douglas
R. Groenewold will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Withee.
Visitation will be at the Maurina Funeral Home in Owen.
He was born July 8, 1888 in Withee to the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl (Augusta
Westphal) Baehr. He married Alma Parge April 18, 1912 in Dorchester; she died
November 29, 1961. He farmed most of his life in the Town of Hixton.
A member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Mr. Baehr is survived by three sons,
Vernon of Thorp, Earl of Withee and Elmer of Chicago; three daughters, Mrs.
Anita Nevala of Thorp, Mrs. Paul (Lorraine) Knoppel of Mount Prospect, Illinois
and Mrs. John (Gertrude) Radamacher of Morris, Illinois. 21 grandchildren; and
26 great-grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by two sons, one daughter, one brother and sisters.
