Editor, New-Herald: I am writing in regard to "Choices of the Heart" a movie
shown on television December 5.
I, as a citizen of the United States, found this movie to be offensive. I feel
it was a Marxist view of the death of the Knoll Hill nuns.
The movie did not clearly point out that these women were communist activists
and were siding with the guerrillas, speaking out against the government and
aiding the enemy. It depicted the government of El Salvador as being very
corrupt and evil and made these women look saintly and good.
Now is the time for the American people to see a movie of such destructive
value, which makes good guys bad and the bad guys good, unless the movie clearly
points out that it is a Marxist view and shows exactly these women's actions.
What about those secret meetings all those students had with that priest and how
he picked Melissa Gilbert to be involved. I believe there was more to those
meetings than met the eye.
I believe the motive behind this movie was to turn the American people against
the government of El Salvador so that they would then encourage President Reagan
to refuse aid to them.
I question the motives of an actor or actress who would take part in such a
movie. In my mind, they're not very patriotic. It is my prayer that any citizen
who viewed this awful movie will look deep into the content and realize the
destructive motive this program had.
We must fight communism, not sympathize and condone it as this movie intended
for us to do.
How do I know this? I have very close American and Salvadorian friends living
there, among all the fighting and killing. Believe me, they support their
government in fighting for freedom from communism in their country, no matter
what the price.
