Inflation has brought a new trend to family lifestyle. With the increasing
amount of families seeing both mom and dad working, the question of what happens
to pre-school children becomes an important factor in family living.
Spencer has been served by only one child day care center for the past four and
a half years. During that time, Mrs. Mariann Gennett owned and operate the
Kiddie Hi Day Care Center, 201 South Chestnut.
Until the start of last month, the Kiddie Hi Center had been taking care of up
to approximately 36 children at different hours of a very long day. Mrs.
Gennett’s center opened at 5:30 a.m. and said goodbye to her last client at 8:30
p.m. She had three staff members helping her with daily assignments.
Since December Kiddie Hi has cut its services to handle only 10 children.
Different hours also came with the change, 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Mr. Gennett
said she cut back “to the point where I can handle it myself.”
The cutback was a matter of economics. According to Gennett, “Government kills
the small business.” She was referring to hikes since July in the areas of state
and federal unemployment fees, insurance and an exorbitant food bill for the
children.
As a result of the cutback by Kiddie Hi two new child care centers have opened
their doors.
Mrs. Jean Radue is currently operating the Radue Day Care Center at 602 Maple
Street. On February 10, Mrs. Radue will be opening new facilities at 105 North
Haslow. She is federally licensed and will be taking care of approximately 20
children. The ages of the children is from six months and up. Presently Mrs.
Radue says she does have a waiting list for prospective clients. If anyone is
interested in the center’s services, they can register with Mrs. Radue.
Mrs. Theresa Kenyon has opened Kenyon’s Day Care Nursery at 600 Jefferson
Street. Mrs. Kenyon will be open to eight clients ranging from birth to seven
years.
Mrs. Gennett is federal licensed as well as state licensed. She has been
involved with children for many years through the foster social services
program. In the years as the only day care center in Spencer, she has taken care
of children from the communities of Unity, Colby, Greenwood, Marshfield and
Spencer.
Children at Kiddie Hi enjoy a wide spectrum of activities. Mrs. Gennett and her
children read stories to the clients. A record library is also maintained at
Kiddie Hi. Activities in teaching children the basics of coloring, numbers, and
geometrical designs also coincide in daily activities. As an example she pointed
out Apple Week, in which children followed the pattern of an apple from its
growth in the backyard tree all the way to the over as it was made into an apple
pie.
Mrs. Gennett has completed courses at Marshfield Technical School in Child
Psychology and has studied child psychology at other schools. Her day care
center is inspected by the state four times yearly at intermittent times.

Walter recalls how he used to take to the wood when he and his brother tried to
play together. “I always had to do things his way when we played,” Walter
remembers, “so I’d run off to the wood instead.” There he watched nature and
apparently absorbed much of its quietness and gentleness into his character.
Walter also makes miniature wishing wells and wishing wells for the yard. They
have a lovely one in their yard. His dad was a stone mason.

Friends and fellow workers of Clark County Sheriff David Bertz, Neillsville,
gathered at the Bali Hai Supper Club East of Neillsville Thursday evening to
honor the outgoing county officer.
Bertz, who was defeated in the primary election in September, became a private
citizen at midnight December 31, 1978, and Harlan Sundermeyer, Sheriff-elect,
will take over. Sundermeyer, of Neillsville, has been serving as investigator
for the sheriff’s department and previous to that was a traffic officer for the
county.
Several associates of Berta reminisced of the days he had spent as sheriff of
the county, and previous to that, a county traffic officer. Bertz began working
for Clark County as a traffic officer in 1957, and took over as sheriff in 1965,
replacing Ray Kutsche, Neillsville, who did not seek re-election.
After receiving gifts, Bertz recalled the early days as a county officer, when
he worked seven days and was off one, and on call all seven days a week. He
thanked the group for the party and his fellow officers for their cooperation
through the year.
