Blake, Samuel Dearborn (2 Mar 1833 - 2 Jul 1915)
*SAMUEL D. BLAKE, **County Treasure of Jackson County, Wisconsin was born in town of Hallowell, Kennebec Co., Me., in the year ***1848. Went to New Hampshire, and engaged in a cotton mill one year, and in 1857 went to Chicago, III., and engaged as clerk in a commission house. Came out to Wisconsin the same year, and settled at North Bend, Jackson Co.. and went to work in a saw-mill for $26 per month, which was being rebuilt by Thomas Douglas. When the mill was completed, Samuel engaged as sawyer, where he remained until 1861, when he enlisted in the 1st Light Artillery Battery, Wis. V. I., at La Crosse, Wis.; served for three years and ten months, and was mustered out as sergeant. Samuel was engaged in all of the principal battles of the Mississippi, and then came to Irving, Jackson Co., and in 1866, took charge of a saw-mill for Olsin & Tibbets, in town of Manchester, and in 1867, was elected Clerk of Circuit Court, to fill vacancy, on resignation of Ira Pope; held that office until 1868, when he was elected County Sheriff for two years, and in 1870, was Assessor of town of Albia, then in March, 1871. went to work for E. J. Spaulding, at Black River Falls, and 1873, he was appointed as Deputy County Treasurer, under Oliver O'Hearn, and at the death of O'Hearn, was appointed by County Board to fill his vacancy, then in 1875, was elected to the office he now holds. Samuel is a member of A. F. & A. M., Black River Lodge, No. 74, Chapter, No. 41, La Crosse Commandery, No. 49. etc., and of the Wisconsin Consistory, 32° S. P. R. S. Was married. Jan. 7, 1878, to Miss Frances O'Hearn, who was born in Dodge Co., Wis., in 1850. Have had two children, Henri D. and William O., who died Aug. 16, 1878, buried in Black River Cemetery.
*Samuel D. Blake, son of John J. & Mary (Hutchinson) Blake. John was born 4 Oct 1797 in Monmouth, Kennebec, Maine. John was the son of Dearborn & Hannah (Johnson) Blake. Mary Hutchinson was born 27 Jun 1801 in Litchfield, Kennebec, Maine. **Oliver O'Hearn, Samuel D. Blake's father-in-law, was the Jackson Co., Wis. Treasurer previous to Samuel Blake. John E. Peterson succeeded Samuel Blake as Treasurer of Jackson County, Wisconsin, 1 Jan 1877. ***The tombstone for Samuel D. Blake in Riverside Cemetery, Jackson Co., Wis. reads: Mar 2, 1833 - Jul 2, 1915, 1st Sgt, 1st Wis. Lt. Arty BN. Frances (O'Hearn) Blake: Feb. 23, 1850 - Sep 26, 1915. Two sons are also buried next to Samuel and Frances (1) Henry, son of S.D. & Fannie, d. Dec 3, 1883, AE 3 yr. 7 mo. 14 da. (2) Willie O., son of S.D. & Fannie, d. Augl 16, 1878, AE 7 mo., 1 da. Oliver O'Hearn is also buried in the same cemetery and his dates are: d. Oct 3, 1875 AE 51 yr, small footstone, P.S.

Oliver O'Hearn

*Family records say Oliver O'Hearn was born 24 Nov 1827 in Newport, Nova Scotia and died 3 Oct 1875 in Black River Falls, Jackson Co., Wisconsin. He immigrated to Fox Lake, Wis. in 1844 (1891 History of Clark & Jackson Co., Wis., pg. 329). In 1852, he went overland to California and returned by steamer in 1854. During a second trip, he was ship wrecked on a coral reed for 7 days. In 1865, he was the treasurer of Jackson Co., Wis., a job later filled by his son-in-law, Samuel Dearborn Blake. Oliver married Phoebe S. Green in 1849 in Fox Lake, Dodge Co., Wisconsin. She was born in 1832 in Connecticut. Oliver and Phoebe's children were: (1) Isabell "Bell" Sarah O'Hearn (b. 12 Apr 1860 at Rice Lake, Jackson Co., Wis.). Bell was a postmistress, school teacher. Her obit mentions a sister, Mrs. Ida Roddy, who came west to care for Bell during her final illness. (2) William R. O'Hearn, b. 1857 in Wis. (3) Frances, b. 1850 in Wis. (4) Ida F. O'Hearn, b. 1863, Wis.
