Young People Walking Home From Dance Run Down by Motorist; Sheriff Oslon Makes Arrest
Gladys Horkey, 18, Humbird, who was struck by a hit and run driver near Humbird early Thursday morning, died of a broken back Saturday morning at Eau Claire hospital.
The driver of the death car, which also struck and injured her escort, Roy Gregory, 19, Humbird, breaking one of his arms and inflicting other serious injuries, was Ed Lindner of Humbird, who is a prisoner in the Clark County jail. As a result of Miss Horkey’s death Lindner will face charges of manslaughter at the fall term of court, according to Hugh Haight, district attorney.
Miss Horkey and Gregory were members of a group walking home from a dance, when, according to reports, Lindner’s car plowed into them. Lindner did not stop after the accident, it was said, but was recognized by members of the party who notified the Jackson County sheriff. They communicated with Sheriff Herman Olson of Neillsville who placed Lindner under arrest a few hours later.
Mr. Lindner’s version of the tragedy has not been learned.
