Rude, Mary (16 Feb. 1888 - 18 May 1934)

Miss Mary Rude, one of the most widely known women of this county and for a number of years prominently identified with its official affairs, passed away Friday, May 18, 1934, at the Wisconsin General Hospital in Madison, where she had been a patient for about three weeks.

Mary Rude was born in Neillsville, Feb. 16, 1888. She was educated in Neillsville Schools, graduating from Neillsville high school in 1906. After graduation she taught in rural schools for several years. Later she was employed in the Woelffer drug store for some time, after which she secured a position in the County Clerk’s office at the court house. In 1924 she was elected county treasurer and served eight years in that office. During these years of public service she met many of the citizens of this county and by her courtesy and efficiency created a large circle of friends.

Miss Rude was for many years an active member of the Eastern Star taking much interest in the work of this order.

Her health during the past year or more had failed and she was in the hospital and under physicians care much of the time. Her condition became so serious that she was taken to the General Hospital where everything possible was done to save her life, but all proved futile.

Miss Rude was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Rude, now deceased, early residents of Neillsville. She is survived by one sister, Josephine, Mrs. Peter Johnson of Neillsville, two brothers, George of Chicago and John J. of Neillsville. A sister Georgina died in childhood; a brother Oscar, a veteran of the Spanish War died in young manhood.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Masonic temple, under the auspices of the order of the Eastern Star, Rev. G. W. Longnecker also officiating. The pallbearers were Charles Buss of Withee, Orley Ripplinger, Harry Dorahue, A. L. Devos, Arthur Flynn and Ernest Snyder, all of Neillsville.

Relatives from out of town attending the funeral were Misses Sadie, Anna and Agnes Strande, and Mrs. Henke all of Rockford, Ill.; Mrs. E. L. Giroulx of Black River Falls; Mrs. Peter Strande, Elroy; Mr. Henry Alm, Oshkosh; Mr. and Mrs. George Rude, Chicago; Mrs. Claude Hanson, Waterford, Wis.; Mrs. Hughes of Milwaukee.

Besides these were many friends from all parts of this county and Dr. and Mrs. R. B. Washburn of Augusta.
