Winters, Sarah (29 May 1850 - 2 June 1934)

Mrs. Sarah Winters, one of the oldest of Neillsville residents, who came to Clark County 67 years ago, died at the home of her son Thomas Winters Saturday afternoon, following a lingering illness.

Sarah Hitchcock, daughter of James and Mary Hitchcock, was born in Devonshire, England, May 29, 1850 and was translated to her heavenly home June 2, 1934, aged 84 years and 4 days.

At 2 years of age she came to America with her parents who settled first near Rochester in the state of New York.

At 4 years of age, the Hitchcock family moved to Wisconsin and settled on a farm near Waupaca. Here, she spent her girlhood days and grew to womanhood.

On April 15, 1866 she was married to J. M. Winters, and the next year they moved to the Town of Washburn in Clark County which was her home until Mr. Winter’s death in the year 1921.

Since then she has made her with her 2 sons, Thomas of Neillsville and William of Tripoli, Wisconsin. Another child, a step son, to whom she was mother for many years, Levi J. Winters is deceased.

Mrs. Winters was one who was known for her splendid Christian character. She was a good mother and wife, and was a member of the Shortville Presbyterian Church and a charter member and worker in the Shortville Ladies Aid Society.

Hers has been a long and useful life. She has enjoyed exceptionally good health until 3 years ago when she suffered a stroke which was followed by another year later. Gradually a strong constitution has been broken down. For the last month she has been confined to her bed, and finally she left this earthly life for "A better country".

She is survived by two sons named above, 11 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren, and is mourned by many friends.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the Lowe Funeral Home, Rev. P. B. White officiating.
