Margaret A. Persok was born on May 5, 1920, in Gilman, the daughter of Stanley and Anna (Filipowicz) Persok. She was raised and educated in Gilman, graduating from Gilman High School in 1936, at the age of 16. Margaret then attended County Normal School in Medford for one year and received her teaching certificate. She began teaching in one-room schools at the age of 17. On May 14, 1942, Margaret was united in marriage to Stanley Harycki. Margaret then taught elementary education in the Thorp Catholic School system. In the mid 1950s, she began taking classes at UW-Eau Claire to complete her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She retired from full-time teaching 1985, and continued to do substitute teaching and volunteer tutoring for some time. Her favorite pastimes included bowling, crafts and TOPS. She was an enthusiastic founder of Father Joe’s Mission Club. Margaret resided in Thorp until March of 2000. She moved to Lakeside Nursing & Rehabilitation in Chippewa Falls, where her son-in-law, Orville, lovingly provided her tender care until the time of her death. Her husband, Stanley, died on January 31, 2001.
She will be sadly missed by two daughters, Marcia Harycki (Orville Gauger) of Chippewa Falls and Ann (Jim) Cue of Madison; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one daughter, Mary Harycki; one sister, Agnes Wetzel; and one brother, Raymond Persok.
