Welsh, Catherine (20 June 1857 - 24 Dec. 1934)
Mrs. Catherine Welsh, one of the pioneer women of Clark County, passed away at the home of her son, Richard, in this city, Monday afternoon, Dec. 24, after a long illness.
Catherine McGinnis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter McGinnis, was born at Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County, New York, June 29, 1857. In 1870 the family came west and settled on a farm in the town of Sherwood, then an almost unbroken wilderness. Here she grew to womanhood and in 1876 was married to John Welsh. They went to a new farm in the town of Washburn, where she again went through the experiences of a pioneer.
In 1896 Mr. and Mrs. Welsh and family moved to Neillsville, later selling the farm, Mr. Welsh died 26 years ago, and Mrs. Welsh continued to lived in the old home until failing in health, a few years ago, she moved to the home of her son.
Mrs. Welsh was a woman of wonderful che3er and good courage. Her genuine kindness of spirit on all occasions won for her universal friendship and esteem. In her life in this community, extending for past half a century, nothing but good was ever spoken of Mrs. Welsh.
She was a faithful and devout member of the Catholic Church, an active member and worker in St. Mary’s Altar Society, also a member of the Neillsville Relief Corps and Royal Neighbors. She leaves one son, Richard, his wife and three children, Gene, Joseph and Francis.
She is survived also by five sisters: Mrs. Margaret Bruley, Rockford, Ill.; Mrs. George Schafer, Merrill, Wis.; Mrs. Ella Philips, Milwaukee; Mrs. L. C. Jurgensen, Green Bay; Miss Lillian McGinnis, St. Paul; and two brothers, P. J. McGinnis, Waukesha, and E. J. McGinnis, Portland, Oregon.
Funeral services were held at 9 o’clock a.m., Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rev. Peter Weber officiating. The pallbearers were Thomas Kelly, T. M. Winters, Sam Cook, John Houser, Earl Bruhn, and Carl Stange.
Those from away attending the funeral were Mrs. Margaret Bruley, Mrs. L. C. Jurgegnsen, Mrs. Geo. Schafer, P. J. McGinnis, Miss Lillian McGinnis, Mr. Roman Brom and Dan Hughes.
