Wicker, Marion P. (SEP 1854 - 11 OCT 1883)
Died, at the family residence in this village (Colby, Clark County, Wis.) on Thursday the 11th inst, of peritonitis, Miss Marion E. second daughter of J. D. and Adelaide A. Wicker, aged 29 years and 1 month.
May, as deceased was familiarly called by her large circle of friends, was born in Williamsburg, N.Y., and came with her parents to this place, a child ten years of age, in Aug. 1873. Having grown up to maturity in our midst, her acquaintances comprised nearly every man, woman and child in the village, and many in the surrounding country. All of whom loved and respected her for her kindly, gentle ways, and vivacious manner. She was taken sick Monday evening, the first inst., and, for several days, was quite low, then became, apparently, much better, so much so that the doctor had great hopes of her recovery, up to Wednesday evening. Thursday morning, the day of her death, was the first that any real alarm was felt as to her recovery, and from that time until the hour of her death, about three o’clock in the afternoon, she sank rapidly away. Her death has cast a gloom over the entire village as all know so well how much her presence will be missed in every gathering. The severity of this loss on the afflicted family can only be realized by those who have suffered a similar affliction. Doubly severe falls the affliction on the sorrowing sister who has always been the constant companion of May at all social gatherings. So severely did she take the loss that, for a time, it was feared that her reason would be dethroned, but, at present writing, we are pleased to state, that she is rapidly improving under the watchful care of loving friends.
It is needless to say that the afflicted family has the sympathies of this entire community, as no death has occurred in our midst, for a long time, that has cast such a gloom over the village as this.
The funeral services took place at the M.E. Church at two o’clock Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Charles Barker of Medford.
