JAMES Ice, lumberman. Black River Falls, was born in Pennsylvania, Dec. 2, 1831; he came to Wisconsin in 1855 to look up a location, only staying two months and then returning to Pennsylvania. In 1859, came to Wisconsin with the intention of remaining here, and settled in Black River Falls where he opened a hardware store in a building which stood where the Jackson County Bank now stands, said store being destroyed by fire in 1860. Mr. Ice then opened a general merchandise store, in partnership with Frank Parsons, which he continued one year, and then started in the lumber business, but only followed it a short time; moved to Hixton, where he kept a general merchandise store in company with L. G. Merrill. Remained there three years, and then returned to Black River Falls, and started in the lumber business again, at which he still continues, and has made Black River Falls his home since. He has held the offIce of Assessor and Supervisor in his town and county; is a member of the I. O. O. F., Albion Lodge, No. 134, and of the Encampment. Was married to his first wife. Miss Sarah J. Shansbook, Dec. 25, 1852; she was a native of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Ice died in February. 1855, leaving two children, Ella J., now Mrs. Albert Dudley Merrill, and Franklin S. Mr. Ice was married to his second wife. Miss Elizabeth Southern, April, 1859; she was born in Pennsylvania, in 1828, and by whom he has four children—James S., Laura J., Mary and Thuey. Mr. Ice now owns 3,200 acres of land in Texas, 200 in Kansas, and 800 acres of pine land in Wisconsin.

JAMES ICE, banker and farmer, was born in Clinton County, Pa., December 2, 1831, and received his education in the common schools of the same State. At the age of twenty-one he emigrated to Jackson, Wisconsin, where he was engaged in farming, milling, lumbering and merchandising. He was married in Lock Haven, Pa., to Sarah J. Shanabrook, in 1852, by whom he has one child living, Mrs. A. D. Merrill, living in Franklin, Wis. Mrs. Ice died in 1855. He was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Southerland, of Clinton County Pa., by whom he has three children - James S., married to Miss Jennie Snell, of Jackson, Wis., now living in Mound Valley; Laura Jane, Mary S., Married to E. S. King, and living in Minnesota. Mr. Ice, besides carrying on his large and beautiful farm of 480 acres of land near the town of Mound Valley, does quite an extensive business in real estate, loan and insurance.
