Burkhardt, Sophia (11 July 1889 - 28 April 1969)
Thorp - Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for Mrs. Sophia Burkhardt, 79, Thorp, who died Monday morning at Neillsville Memorial Hospital.
The Rev. Robert Olson, pastor, will officiate and burial will be made in the East Cemetery. Friends May call at the Thorp Funeral Home beginning at 4 p.m. today.
The former Sophia Augustine was born July 11, 1889, in Green Grove, and was married to Alfred Burkhardt, who preceded her in death. For the past five months she had made her home in the Memorial Nursing Home at Neillsville. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church and of its Ladies Aid.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ben Burkhardt, Thorp; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a brother, Ernst Augustine, St. Paul, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her son, Ben, on Dec. 23, 1968.

Alfred Burkhardt was born 01 Sep 1879 in Calumet, Wisconsin when his mother (Caroline) was thirty-nine and his father (Christopher) was forty-one. She had divorced fifty-six year old, Ephraim Adolpf Friedrich "Fred" Neumann, January 14th of that year in the Circuit Court at Manitowoc, WI. At the time of the 1930 Census in the village of Thorp, thirty-year-old Alfred was working at the Box Factory and living in the home of Mary (30 yrs.) and Peter (39 yrs.) Heiser (who also employed byt the same factory) and their daughters Evelyn (10 yrs.) and Florance (5 yrs.) and sons, Lawrence (9 yrs.) and Benney (8 yrs.). During his thirty-fifth year, Alfred married Sophia Augustine Burkhardt 18 Jun 1914. The next day, when their wedding photos were taken, she was held a beautiful bouquet of daisies. Their son Benjamin John was born March 14, 1915. After a hospital admission May 19, 1956, he passed away and was buried in 1957 in the East Thorp Cemetery, Clark Co., Wisconsin. In 1968, Benjamin was also laid to rest in the same cemetery and a year later Sophia was also buried there.
