Phonograph (Colby, Clark County, Wis.) 05/04/1893 Shafer, Lula (12
APR 1877 - 4 May 1893) As we were
preparing this issue for the press the dread summons that in time
must come to al, visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe J. Shafer and
called from this mortal life to life immortal, their eldest
daughter, and all that remains of Lula, is the lump of pulseless
clay that will return to the dust from whence it came. Lula was born in
the city of Beaver Dam, April 12, 1877, consequently was 22 days
more than 16 years of age. Having come to this place with her
parents when but little more than a year of age, she had become
known to everybody in this vicinity, and was loved by all for her
quiet and pleasant ways. She was a bright, intelligent girl, and a
favorite among her companions. She was never of a
robust constitution yet was always of a cheerful disposition. A
little more than a year ago she was taken with la grippe which soon
developed into the dread disease, consumption, and for nearly a
year she has been a patient sufferer, living in hopes that every
next season would bring her back to health. During the past winter
and the present spring she failed rapidly until the strain upon the
thread of life became so great that it snapped in twain at two
o’clock this afternoon. What is our loss
is her gain, yet the sad blow feels none the less severe upon the
heads of the bereaved parents, who, we feel sure, will receive a
full measure of sympathy from their many friends. The funeral will
be held at the M. E. Church on Sunday morning next, at 10:30
o’clock, and will be conducted by Rev. D. P. Olin. The
remains will be interred in the Lutheran Cemetery at Wein, Marathon
Co., Wis.
