Bertz, Peter (26 MAR 1868 - 19 Sep 1932)

Peter Bertz was born March 26, 1868 in the town of Rubicon, Dodge Co., Wisconsin. He attended school, grew to manhood and lived with his mother on the home farm. April 8, 1896 the deceased moved to Clark county and engaged in farming in the Town of Loyal. On August 31, 1897 he married Miss Margaret Campbell of Ashippun who survives him. During June, 1928 they retired from active farming, purchased a home in this village; their son James continued farming on the homestead.

Monday afternoon, Sept. 19 at about 4:30 P. M. , the deceased passed away suddenly at his home. His wife was with him at the time. Apparently in fair health, his sudden death was, it is believed , caused by heart failure.

The deceased was a kind and true husband and father, devoted to his family. An outstanding trait of character was a natural retiring disposition. He was a man that was always temperate in all things, friendly, neighborly and a lover of peace. Those coming in contact with him found he had the sterling quality of faithfulness. Any trust of confidence placed with him was never misplaced.

Peter Bertz leaves his beloved wife; his son, James, and daughter-in-law, nee Hedwig Bichler; three brothers, George and Philip of Neosho; Joseph of this village; other relatives and many friends and acquaintances. A sister, Gertrude, Mrs. Matt Kiefer; two brothers, Adam and Henry, preceded him into the Great Beyond.

Funeral services were held last Thursday morning at St. Anthony’s Church, the Rev. A. J. Aurit officiating. Interment took place in the Parish cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews of his: Joseph Bertz of Neosho; Raymond Bertz of Oshkosh; Ed Bertz, Rueben Bertz, John Bertz, and Harold (Pat) Bertz, all of Loyal.

Among those from away attending the funeral were: George Bertz and daughter Margaret and sons Joseph and Philip of Neosho; Philip Bertz of Neosho; Mrs. Henry Bertz of Milwaukee and son Raymond of Oshkosh; Mrs. Robert Strtham of Colby; Mrs. James Campbell, mother of Mrs. Peter Bertz of Milwaukee; James Campbell of Rubicon and son James of Ellsworth; Mrs. Fred Mortensen and Mrs. Henry Westover both of Milwaukee and peter Kiefer of Woodland.
