Phonograph (Colby, Clark County, Wis.) 11/09/1893 Rasmussen, Nels C.
(13 Augl 1824 - 7 NOV 1893) Died, at his
residence in the town of Hull, Marathon Co., Wis., on Tuesday, Nov.
7th, 1893, of cancer of the stomach, Nels Christian Rasmussen, in
the 70th year of his age. Mr. Rasmussen was
born in Tystrope, Denmark, Aug. 13th, 1824, where he attained his
majority. He was a soldier in the Danish Army and served two years
in the campaign against Germany in 1848. Aug. 26th, 1854,
he was united in marriage with Miss Bertha Sophie Hanson, who
survives him. This union was blessed with eight children, all of
whom survive to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent parent. In May 1882 he
came to America and directly to this place, where he had been
preceded one year by his eldest son Peter, and purchased the J. B.
Carpenter property, where he has made his home since. He was a very
quiet, genial old gentleman and gained the respect of everyone with
whom he came in contact, by his rigidly honest and upright
ways. The funeral
occurred today at the M. E. Church and the remains were laid to
rest in Colby Cemetery, escorted by a large concourse of friends
and acquaintances. Of the children
there were four sons, Peter and Fred of this place, Charles of
Elma, Wash., and Julius of Thorp, and four daughters, one in
Denmark, Mrs. N. P. Hanson, Mrs. Louis Johnson, all of Thorp and
Miss Carrie at home.
