Sternweis, Mary M. (3 Aug. 1917 - 29 July 2005)

Mary M Sternweis, age 87, of Marshfield died on Friday, July 29, at Lighthouse Elder Care in Marshfield.

Mary was born on August 3, 1917 in Milladore to Charles and Theresa (Tremel) Brandl and attended St. Kilian’s School in Blenker. She lived on Mayflower Road in Blenker where her dad built their home from his own logs. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a maid and nanny for Dr. Copps in Marshfield and also did home care. She was united in marriage to Leo J Sternweis on June 30, 1942 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Milladore. Leo died on May 21, 1990.

Leo bought the Glenco Guernsey Dairy Farm in the fall of 1941 and later added a beef cattle operation. They founded Sternweis Trucking and in 1972 with their family started Sternweis & Sons, Inc. The corporation purchased the Owen Block Co. and founded Sternweis & Sons Block Division in 1974. They added their own crushing and washing operation in the town of Warner, Clark County in 1980.

Besides being a homemaker, she did the bookkeeping for the family businesses. Mary was a wonderful cook and enjoyed baking. She was famous for her peanut butter bars, along with other special recipes. She loved vegetable and flower gardening, crocheting and making 39 Afghans for her family members.

Surviving Mary are five daughters, Ruth (Michael) Hildebrandt and Mary (Jeffrey) Kollmansberger, both of Chili; Charlotte (Darrel) Downing, of Gilbert, AZ; Margaret (Gerald) Perner, of Lake Tomahawk; Donna (Ronald) Martin, of Marshfield; one son Glen (Barbara) Sternweis, of Marshfield; and a daughter-in-law Kerene J (Gary) Schiller, of Marshfield; 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband Leo; three sons, Jeffrey on June 20, 1966; Gary on February 15, 1973; and Eugene on November 20, 1991; one brother Charles Brandl; a sister Theresa Dieringer; and a daughter-in-law Christine Eul. She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation is on Wednesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of the services. Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 10:30 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with Rev. Bernard Raschke. Suzanne Golden will be the organist along with Michael Gonering as the vocalist. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery of Marshfield.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Randy Hildebrandt, Bill and Josh Downing, Pat Perner, Christopher, Tim, Matthew, Jeremy and Adam Sternweis.
