Cook, Sarah (1840 - 1 Jan 1915)

Mrs. Sarah Cook, one of the oldest residents of this locality, died at her home in the town of Hewett, Clark County, New Years Day.

Sarah Metcalf was born in Massachusetts in 1840, and moved with her parents to Springfield, Ohio when a child. With the exception of a short residence at Adrian, Ohio, she lived at Springfield till grown to womanhood. She was married to Morton M. Cook at Tiffen, Ohio, in 1856, and they moved to the present home in Hewett in 1867, which was her residence until her death. Mr. Cook died in 1905. To them were born ten children: Mrs. Laura Cox of Greenwood and George Cook of Merrillan, both deceased. Those still living are Mrs. Frank Ayers, Alonzo Cook and Ray Cook of Neillsville; Mrs. Henry Clark, Merrillan; Morton M. Cook, Fifield; Jay Cook, Leroy Cook and Mrs. Jas. Radek of Centralia, Wash. She leaves also six brothers: Ephraim Metcalf of Alma, Mich.; Eli Metcalf of Quincy, Ohio; Dan Metcalf, Hayward, Wis.; Nelson Metcalf of Black River Falls; Andrew Metcalf of Neillsville and Aliden Metcalf of Hewett. She left one sister at Quincy, Ohio.

Mrs. Cook possessed all the virtues of the good New England pioneers. In her home were centered the industry, love and helpfulness that have in all ages made home the ideal place; yet with all the demands that the care and comforts of her home and family made upon her, she was first and foremost in deeds of neighborly kindness. She was sought in times of sickness and distress, and her practical common sense, her willing hands and quick helpful sympathy brought relief to Neighbors far and near. Many of those to whom she ministered have gone before her or are in distant places, but many still will remember with keenest thankfulness her many acts of kindness, and will mourn to know that she has gone.

The funeral was held at the Presbyterian Church, Neillsville, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. S.B. Pinney officiating. She was laid to rest in the Neillsville Cemetery by side of her husband.
