HEWETT MACBRIDE ----Source: Clark
County Republican & Press (Neillsville, Wis.) 06/15/1916 Gates, Jane (4 DEC
1828 - 8 JUN 1916) Mrs. Jane Gates,
one of the oldest residents of Neillsville, Clark County, died at
her home June 8, 1916, aged 87 years 6 months and 4 days. Her
maiden name was Jane Hewett, and she was born in Essex Co., NY.
Dec. 4, 1828. She grew to womanhood there and was married to Daniel
Gates April 23, 1848. They came west in 1855, living about a year
at Fairfield, Iowa. In 1856 they came to Clark County and kept
hotel at the mouth of Wedges Creek, and in 1861 moved upon the farm
at the city limits of Neillsville, which was her home until her
death. Mr. Gates died Jun 28, 1885. Mrs. Gates was
endowed with those qualities which fitted her for pioneer life; she
was energetic in all the duties of the home and household. As long
as she had health and strength her family had every comfort her
hands and active mind could give, and yet she found time to
cultivate her intellect and take part in neighborhood affairs.
During the latter years of her life she was practically confined to
her room, much of the time being unable to leave her bed, but she
bore her affliction patiently, and with her hands continued to work
and be of service to those about her. She leaves three children,
Mrs. R.J. MacBride, Charles Gates and Edwin H. Gates, all of this
city; one son, James L. Gates of Milwaukee and a daughter Nellie
are deceased. She leaves also 15 grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren. The funeral was
held at the house on Saturday, Rev. S.B. Pinney officiating. The
family wishes to extend their thanks to the neighbors and friends
who gave help and sympathy during the long sickness, death and
burial of their mother.
