COURIER (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.) 08/22/1884 Warner, Charlie
(1872 - 15 Augl 1884) A sad accident
occurred near this village (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.) about 10
o’clock on Friday morning last. Two boys, one a step-son of
Cline Cradle named Charlie Warner, aged 12 years., the other named
Frank Lavell, a son of Pat Lavell, aged 14, came here from North
Fork, where their parents reside, on some errand and upon
returning, when about half a mile west of this village, stopped to
practice shooting at a mark, each having a revolver. After shooting
a few times the boys exchanged revolvers, the one in the hands of
Frank Lavell being cocked, and in handing it to Charlie it went
off, the ball a 22 short, taking effect in Charlie’s chest,
causing almost instant death. The boys being excellent friends, the
shooting was purely accidental. Frank immediately stated for the
village and summoned Dr. McCutcheon, who upon arriving at the
scene, found the boy dead. The following jury: F. Gillespie, H.
Holzhausen, M DuCate, T.O. Mosher, V.R. Mead and Pete Schroeder,
was sworn in by Justice Tiedemann, who upon viewing the remains
rendered a verdict of "accidental shooting". The body was taken to
North Fork in the afternoon and interred on Saturday. Parents
should let this sad accident remind them that revolvers are
dangerous playthings in the hand of their children.
