GREENWOOD GLEANER (Greenwood, Wis.) 06/26/1919 Haefner, Evan S.
(13 NOV 1901 - 15 JUN 1919) Evan Samuel
Haefner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Haefner, was born in Lafayette,
Monroe Co., Wis., Nov. 13, 1901. He drowned at Hemlock dam in Black
River in the town of Warner, Clark County, Wis., on Sunday June 15,
1919, while trying to save his little friend Erwin Kraatz, who also
drowned. Deceased came to
the town of Warner about four years ago with his parents. Men from miles
around showed their sympathy and kindness by searching all nigh and
until Monday about noon, when the body was found. Mr. and Mrs.
Withee carried hot coffee and lunch to the river for the men in
search of the boy. Evan was 17 years,
7 months and 2 days old, and leaves to mourn his loss, his mother
and father and two brothers, Melvin at home and Lossen of
McLaughlin, S.D., Mrs. Mildred Purdy of Tunnel City, Wis., and Mrs.
Pircis Vine of Owen, Wis., all of who were present at the funeral,
which was held at the Methodist Church last Thursday afternoon,
Rev. Moats officiating. Interment was made in the Greenwood
Cemetery. The bereaved
parents have the sympathy of all in this their time of sorrow. A vacant chair, a
voice that is stilled, how our hearts ache, but his cheery smile
and good hearted way will linger in our memory day by day.
