GREENWOOD GLEANER (Greenwood, Wis.) 04/01/1920 Hendren, W. T. (19
DEC 1834 - 20 Mar 1920) Rev. W. T. Hendren
was the son of Thomas C. and Mary Hendren, and was born near
Columbus, Ohio, in the year 1834. There he grew to
manhood, graduating from the Baptist School at Granville, Ohio. He then took a
Theological Course of four years at Western Theological Seminary at
Allegany, Pa., finishing in 1864. So great was his
interest in foreign missions that he was under appointment to serve
as missionary to Africa, but owing to ill health physicians forbade
his going. However, last May
he sent his watch and chain by a returning missionary to be used at
that mission. He then came west,
locating at Caledonia, Minn., where he labored five and one-half
years. From there he came
to Neillsville, Clark County, Wis., where he was pastor nineteen
years. He then came to
Greenwood, where he spent the remainder of his life. Mr. Hendren was
married to Miss Lounda Wright at Macomb, Ohio, in 1866. He spent a long
and useful life and his record of marriages and burials is
remarkable, in as much as he not only married the grandmothers and
children, but grandchildren and children as well. It is safe to say
he married and buried more people than any other minister in Clark
Count, Wis. He leaves to mourn
his loss, his wife, a sister, and one grandchild, whose mother
preceded him in death seventeen years ago. Also a host of
friends who will miss his kindly help and counsel. He was laid to
rest in the Greenwood Cemetery and his resting place is a portion
of land which he formerly donated to the cemetery. The Rev. Warneck
of Marshfield Presbyterian Church officiating, assisted by Rev.
Moats of Greenwood M.E. Church. The Odd Fellows,
of which order he was a member for a number of years, took charge
at the cemetery. Those who attended
the funeral from away were: Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Peacock, Fennimore,
Wis., Fred H. Ball and daughter Joyce, Stevens Point, Miss Kate
Ball, Stevens Point, Mrs. Eliza Follett, Marshfield, Wis.
