CHARLES MEYER FAMILY

Charles Meyer was born in Jefferson County, Wis., Jan. 12, 1859, son of George and Mary (Switzer) Meyer, who had settled there in 1851 after coming to this country from Germany.

In 1884 at the age of 25, Charles and his brother George came to Clark County where they bought eighty acres of wild land. They built a log house on the land and lived there for two years. At the end of that time Charles built a frame house for himself. A year later George sold his forty acres and went to Oregon.

Charles cleared his forty acres and later purchased the house that Mr. Heine, the sawmill proprietor, had used for a boarding house. Charles moved this house onto his place and united it with his house, making it into a seven room house. He then built a 34x54 foot barn.

Three years after coming to Clark County, Charles married Annie Scheeklman whose father was formerly postmaster of Heinetown. Charles was assistant postmaster. Charles raised Holstein cattle and farmed. He also served as school director for two years and for eight years as treasurer. Their religion was Catholic.

Charles and Annie had eight children - Leo, Matilda, Alvin, Albert, George, Elizabeth and Julita.
