Tompkins, William Calvin-- White 34 (1826) year old married male who was born in Clyde, New York before it was incorporated 2 May, 1835. Prior to that it was known as "Blockhouse" and "Lauraville".  Andrew McNab spoke of the area's likeness to the "Clyde River" in Scotland where he'd grown up.  Andrew's fond memories of fishing and boating in the moorlands of the Uplands of Scotland's most famous and important river, convinced his fellow landowners to name their village "Clyde."

A log house stood on the corner of Sylvester Clark's garden where classes were taught by William McLouth. A high school was incorporated 23 Apr 1834 in a 2 story brick structure on the corner of Lock and Caroline Streets.

August 14, 1850, twenty-three year old William Calvin Tompkins and eighteen year old Mary A. Grove became husband and wife in Allen, Ohio.

There were 3 males and 3 females living in his household.  He mad his living as a Printer and possessed $600 of Real-estate  and had a personal wealth of $800.  He was the enumerator of the 1860 Pine Valley, Clark County, Wisconsin census.  His neighbors were William Neverman, a 25 yr. old Mecklenberg born carpenter and the James and Jane O'Neill and their 11 yr. old daughter Isabella, 9 yr. old Thomas, 6 yr. old Maria who were farming. The lawyer, Samuel M. Dickenson, the 15 yr. old, (Scottish born) John Paxton and a master carpenter, 25 yr. old D. C. McDonald who was from Canada.

Parents: Calvin Dean Tompkins (1792 in Morristown, Morris, NJ-d. NY).  He was the son of Jacob Tompkins and Abigail Dean. His mother was Eliza T. Field (1806-Jan 1889 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, MI). She was the daughter of Daniel Field Jr. & Rhoda Salisbury

William Calvin Tompkins married Mary A. Grove 14 August 1850 in Mansfield, Allen, Ohio. She was born 18 March 1832 in Morristown, Morris, NJ and died 14 November 1919 and was buried in the Webster Cemetery, NC).  Apparently, her relative, Henry Harrison Grove, married William Calvin Tompkin's sister, Electra Rachel Tompkins/ Stroke/ Grove (17 Augl 1822, NY--14 Jul 1913 in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA--Widowed).

Mrs. Tompkins was in her eighth year, and while she bad been in other poor health for several years, her passing came as a shock. She retired on Thursday night, apparently as well as .usual, but was taken sick during the night and died at an early hour Friday morning. The funeral service was conducted at the home in Webster Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock, by Revs. L Myers and John Hoglen and the irterment took plan at the
Webster cemetery.

Mrs. Tompkins is survived hi two daughters, Aims Amanda Tompkins, of Webster, and Mrs. Lillian Vance of Colorado, and a number of grand children: Dan Tompkins, of Sylva, Dean H. Tompkins of Ashtown, Ark., Mrs. Robert Bush, of Popular Bluff, Mo., Fred Tompkins, of St. Louis, Mo., and others living in the west.  She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Amanda C. Lee. of Denver, Co.

Mansfield, Ohio was incorporated as a village in 1828, just 4 years before Mary A. was born to Henry Grove.  and then as a city in 1857 with a population of 5,121. Between 1846 and 1863, the railroads came to the city with the Sandusky, Mansfield and Newark Railroad being the first railroad to reach Mansfield in 1846, the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway in 1849, and the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad in 1863.

WILLIAM C. TOMPKINS' FUNERAL.   *************** The funeral of William C. Tompkins, the wealthy harness manufacturer, who died suddenly at the Cecil, 247 Belleville avenue, on Tuesday, was held to­day at 3 o'clock. the Rev. Dr. Lyman Whitney Allen, of South Park Presby­terian Church, officiating. The honorary pall bearers were: Henry T. Jones Edward Spaeth, Theodore Gray, Charles L. Kilburn, James P. Bloom, S. Newton Van Nees, Charles M. Lum, Carl Lentz. The interment was in Mt, Pleasant Cemetery.

A high toned robber.

Troy, N. Y., July 9. A startling sensation has been created by the discovery of a robbery done by Wm. C. Tompkins, a member of a wealthy family and moving in the first society. He is married, and is a
partner in the firm of Simmons & Tompkins, knit-good manufacturers. Tompkins is a young man of handsome appearance,
but within the last few months has become dissipated. It seems that' he received $413 as his share of the robbery.
