Granton, Clark County, Wis., died on Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at the
Memorial Medical Center, Neillsville. Funeral services were held at
11 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Zion American Lutheran Church,
Granton. The Rev. David Johnson officiated. Music was provided by
Marjorie Dahl. Burial was in the Zion American Lutheran Church
Cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Terry Kurth, Dennis
Kurth, Scott Newman, David Kurth, Travis Kurth, Shawn Newman and
Darin Kurth. Verna Helena
Goebel was born on Aug. 30, 1920, in Granton, to Paul and Nelda
(nee Garbisch) Goebel. She attended the Roder Country School near
Granton, and then worked in the area helping families in their
homes. She married Raymond Kurth on Sept. 27, 1941, in Granton.
They later purchased her parents’ farm. She worked at the
Granton High School and from 1967-75 at Spaete’s Locker Plant
in Granton wrapping meat and checking out. After her
husband’s death in 1977, she returned to Spaete’s and
worked until 1992, when she retired. She continued to live at her
home in Granton until December 2002. She was a member of Zion
American Lutheran Church, Granton. Survivors include
five children, Wayne (Karen) Kurth, Neillsville, Sandra (Ronald)
Newman, Watertown, Glen (Geri) Kurth, Marshfield, Michael
(Claudette) Kurth, Granton, and Sharon (Norm) Piotrowski,
Watertown; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister,
Edna Garbisch, Neillsville; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in
death were her husband and her parents. The Gesche Funeral
