Zimmer, John Sr. (18 Sep 1828 - 14 Dec 1896)

John Zimmer Sr., an old and respected resident of the town of Reseburg, Clark County, Wis., died of pneumonia on Monday morning last, aged 68 years. He was born at Elsas near Strasburg, Germany, on Sept. 18, 1828, and immigrated to Canada when 39 years of age. In 1868 he was united in marriage with Carolina Pfrimmer, whose death occurred on Dec. 23, 1895. In 1877 he came to the United States and three years later settled on a farm in the town of Reseburg, where he has since resided. He was highly respected by all his neighbors and like several old citizens who have recently gone to that better land, he will long and kindly be remembered. He leaves three children, John Jr., Mrs. Peter Deforth and Mrs. Chas. Roessler. The funeral occurred yesterday, burial taking place in the cemetery near his late home.

Thank you for posting this, which I found on Google; it lists my Great Grandfather and my grandmother; this is information I never had before! What caused you to list it?

I have been to France, and two other French speaking countries, but my knowledge of French never got past wine labels. Using an internet translator (http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr) I rewrote your message: "Of which village close to Strasbourg did John Zimmer in originate? In my village (Eckwersheim) there are many families named Pfrimmer and Zimmer. I understand English but I am not able to write it. Cordially, AMB" The answer to your question is Elsas. La réponse à votre question est Elsas. JWS

Peter, My wife and I have a retirement project of putting as much history about Clark County, Wis. on the internet as we can on the website noted below. One of the things we have done is obtain the Thorp Courier newspapers for 1873 to 1921 and extract the obituaries and marriage notices. We plan to do that for all the newspapers in the county up to 1921, and then go on ten years at a time. Just last week we were in Clark County and photographed all the tombstones in the Thorp Village Cemetery. I don't recall whether John Zimmer was buried there or not. A fellow named Allen Boardman will be working on posting that cemetery to the website over the next several months.  We are doing this project for people just like you who May be looking for information about ancestors in Clark County.
