Trnka, Dr. Edward D. (Note: This published biography should have read, "Edward M. Trnka")
Dr. Edward D. Trnka, Chiropractor, was born in New Prague, Minn., received his degree from the Minnesota Chiropractic college in 1938 and opened his first office in Loyal, Clark County, Wis., the same year. This office was located on the second floor if what was then the Richardson Building. Three years later he moved to his present location at 217 Main St.
The basic chiropractic science is the system, or practice, of adjusting the joints, especially of the spine, by hand for the curing of disease. A valuable tool used by the chiropractor to pinpoint the source of pain is the X-ray machine. Dr. Trnka purchased his first X-ray two year after he began his practice. The one he uses today is his third.
He was president of the Wisconsin Chiropractic Basic Research in 1949, has been a member of the City Council in Loyal and was on the Loyal Public Library Board for several years. He was chairman of a committee to put on Loyal Days and also chaired a committee, which presented a talent show in Loyal around 1939. Dr. Trnka is a member of the International Who's Who.
Shortly after moving to Loyal, Dr. Trnka met Miss Arleen Erickson, who taught English and Music at Loyal High School. They were married in 1940. Mr. Trnka gave up teaching after their marriage but still gives private piano and organ lessons.
The Trnkas have four children, Kathryn, Ruth, John, and Kenneth.

Trnka, Arleen (22 Feb 1913-11 Dec 2009)
Arleen B. Trnka, 96, Colby, formerly of Loyal, died on Friday, Dec. 11, 1009, at Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 16m at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Loyal. The Rev. Jerome Naduvathaniyil officiated. Burial followed in St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Trnka, Mike Trnka, Chet Berkey, Ben Berkey, Chris Berkey and Harvey Denenhardt.
Arleen Bernice Erickson was born on Feb. 22, 1913, in Racine, the oldest of three children born to Wilhelm and Augusta (nee Kihl) Erickson. She was raised and received her education in Racine, graduating from Par High School in 1932. She then attended Milwaukee State Teachers College, currently the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she graduated in 1936, with a major in music. Her first job was at Dorchester High School, where she taught music until becoming supervisor of vocal music in West Milwaukee Schools from 1939-40. In 1940, she moved to Loyal, where she taught both music and English at Loyal High School. She married Dr. Edward M. Trnka on Jun 20, 1940, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Loyal. She was the organist at the church for many years, and also gave private piano and organ lessons. She resided in Loyal until moving to Angelus Retirement Community, now Colby Retirement Community, in Nov. 2000.
She was an independent person, who was outspoken and feisty. She was also very intelligent, you never challenged her unless you were very sure of your facts. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and thoroughly enjoyed her visits with friends, who frequently came to see her.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathryn (Chester) Berkey, Eau Claire, and Ruth Trnka, Mosinee; one son, John (Patty) Trnka, Rochester, Minn.; and four grandchildren, Christopher Berkey, Dr. Benjamin Berkey, Jennifer Trnka and Michael Trnka.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Edward "Doc" Trnka, on Aug. 1, 1990; one son, Dr. Kenneth Trnka; and two brothers, Russell Erickson and Irving Erickson.
Could the year be wrong in this article? He is reported to have graduated in 1938, and I thought he did not move to Loyal until he set up his practice after graduation.
(article on Loyal Public Library - excerpt)
"The treasury was improved in 1921 by the R. N. A. giving an entertainment: Harry Haslett and Harry Moore arranging a baseball game. In 1937 Dr. E. W. Trnka directed a play and in 1940 Mrs. Gwin did likewise. Funds were solicited from time to time. In 1925 a Christmas tree was set up in the telephone office where 71 books and $23 were collected. The Towns of Sherman, Beaver and Loyal, as well as the village, contributed."
In the Fourth Ward, R. B. Giese won in a three cornered race for alderman, receiving 52 votes to 16 for Edward M. Trnka and 50 for Albert Witt, incumbent trustee. The post of alderman-supervisor went to Bert B. Brown, who received 58 votes, while Arthur Schutte received 35 and Melvin Zettler received 23.
