Hable, Dr. Albert P.

Dr. Albert P. Hable, family physician and friend to the residents of Loyal, Clark County, Wis. and surrounding area for the past 30 years, received his degree in Medicine from Marquette University in 1933. That same year he started his first private practice at Gilman, Wis., a small community not too far from his boyhood home at Bloomer, Wis.

In 1940 he moved to Loyal. In reviewing his 37 years as a general practitioner he noted many changes in the medical profession. A diagnosis could be made as accurately 37 years ago as it can be today, but the tragedy then was the many illnesses for which little could be done after diagnosis was made. An illness in 1933, particularly one that developed rapidly, was a very frightening thing. A first reaction to pain and distress was a hurried phone call, asking the doctor to come to the patient. Many miles over primitive country roads, late at night more often than not, was covered by the doctor in his second hand Model A.

When Dr. Hable was working for his degree he estimated his maximum cost for the 8-year period was $9000. Today the same training costs $25,000 and that's a pretty expensive neighborhood. If a young person has to borrow that amount, it is not likely that he can afford to come to a small town to practice as the income would seldom be sufficient to offset his cost of loving plus his payments on the loan for his education. He then has little choice but to locate in a large city.

The doctor and his wife, the former Felicitas Bruns OF Milwaukee, Have five children, Mary, Kathleen, Jane, Ann and Paul.

Mary teaches at the Milwaukee Technical Institute. Kathleen is a Pediatrician at May Clinic, Rochester, Minn. Jane will begin her sophomore year at Marquette Medical School this fall. Ann is a Medical Recorder's Librarian at Mercy Hospital, Oshkosh. Paul will be a senior at Loyal.

Dr. Hable enjoys his leisure time as much as he does his work. His favorite hobbies are reading, fishing, cards and hunting, in that order.
