The Sisters of St. Joseph (SSJ’s) from Thorp will join nearly 700 SSJ’s from
across the nation and from Puerto Rico and Alaska as they gather from June 26 –
July 2, 1976 for their 75th Jubilee Homecoming in Stevens Point.
In 1901 the Order was founded in Stevens Point under the direction of Father
Luke Pescinski, pastor of St. Peter’s Church.
The career of SSJ’s, which has had Sisters serving in Thorp schools for 26
years, has spent the past year planning and organizing the event.
Sister Elizabeth Dedo, teacher at Thorp Catholic School in Thorp, said that 5
Sisters from the Thorp area will attend the week-long event.
They include: Sisters Elizabeth Dedo, Kathleen Koltis, Regine Wierzba, Joanne
Waschowiak and Mary Jane Knitter.
The Order began in July 1901, when 46 Polish-speaking members of the School
Sisters of St. Francis from Milwaukee gathered in Stevens Point to form the
nucleus of the new Sisters of St. Joseph community. The SSJ community arose to
help fill the spiritual and educational need of immigrant Polish people who had
settled in large numbers in Green Bay and Stevens Point areas.
