Neillsville St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran (100th Anniversary - 1986)
It was 100 years ago that St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of 711 W. 5th
Street, Neillsville, got its start. The congregation traces its roots back to
January of 1886 when services were first held, and a school started with H. H.
Ebert as the first pastor and teacher. The first full resident pastor was F. J.
Eppling, Jr., who came to Neillsville in April of 1886. The congregation was
then organized and took the name of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on
September 6, 1886.
This year St. John’s is observing this celebration with a number of special
celebration Sundays. These are spread throughout the calendar year and involve
special services, special guest speakers, and special dinners and reunions. One
of these celebrations is coming up this coming Sunday, March 9, 1986. On this
Sunday special services will be held at 8:00 and 10:00 a.m., with special music,
the choir singing, a special guest speaker, and light refreshments served after
each service by the St. John’s Teens Group.
The guest speaker for these services will be Pastor Thomas Lindloff. Pastor
Lindloff is the son of Pastor Lindloff who served as St. John’s Pastor for 25
years until 1984. Pastor Thomas Lindloff grew up in Neillsville, but then went
off to study for the ministry. He is now teaching at Lakeside Lutheran High
School in Lake Mills, Wisconsin.
