Markiewicz, Peter (1899? - 17 Sep 1916)

On Sunday afternoon last a number of neighborhood boys were at the house of Alex Wisniewski in the town of Thorp, Clark County, Wis. While Peter Markiewicz and his brother were engaged in a friendly way wrestling, Mr. Wisniewski's step son, Charles Cukla, picked up a 22-caliber rifle and shot Peter Markiewicz in the forehead, the latter dying an hour later as a result. The boy who did the shooting is ten years of age and supposed the gun was unloaded when he pulled the trigger. The boy shot was seventeen years of age. On Monday justice of the peace George Burke impaneled a jury and with district attorney, W. J. Rusch, fully investigated the matter, the jury finding that the shooting was accidental and exonerated the Cukla boy. The funeral of the victim took place on Wednesday from st. Hedwig's Church, Father Pudlo officiating.
