77, Neillsville, died on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at the Memorial
Medical Center, Neillsville. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m.,
on Friday, May 9, at the United Church of Christ, Neillsville. The
Rev. James Mohr officiated. Music was provided by Eileen Zank,
organist, and Ertz Steiger, soloist. Burial was in the Neillsville
City Cemetery, with military rites accorded by the Neillsville
Veterans Council. Pallbearers were Jeff Heinemann, Craig Short,
Eben Short, Jeff Short, Kevin Short and Shawn Wilcox. Honorary
pallbearers were Robert Poler, Frank Rizner, George Rizner and Pink
Van Gordon. Kenneth Duane
Short was born on Dec. 13, 1925, in Neillsville, to Frank and Dessa
(nee Payne) Short. He attended school in Neillsville and served in
the U.S. Air Force. After returning from the service in 1946, he
worked for Weidenhoff of Neillsville. He married Frances Steinle on
Jan. 18, 1947, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church,
Neillsville. After their marriage they bought a farm in the town of
Pine Valley, where they farmed with her parents. In 1949, they sold
their farm and moved to town. He then worked for Herb Smith at
Badger State Telecom Co., which later became TDS Telecom. He worked
there as an employee and manager for 40 years. He retired in 1989.
His interests included fishing, hunting, camping and his
family. Survivors include
his wife, Frances; two sons, Kenneth F. Short, Oregon, and Keith
(Jean) Short of Wautoma; one daughter, Kim (Terry) Stetzer,
Neillsville; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one
sister, Helen Matousek, McKinney, Texas; and many nieces and
