Historical Society, Stanley, Wisconsin

The Stanley Historical Society (pictured above) is located just across the county line, in Chippewa Co., Wisconsin. It houses an outstanding genealogical and historical collection which includes many items pertaining to the northwestern portion of Clark Co. They are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm. They are in the process of stocking an exciting new research library and are very eager helpers with a vast collection of indexed news clippings. They have also established an interesting museum. If you are researching the townships of Thorp, Withee, Worden, Reseburg, Butler or Mead, this Society could prove extremely helpful and the members seem very willing to do whatever they can to be of service.

Address:

Stanley Area Historical Museum, Stanley, WI 54768 USA

The Society members are also very active at the public library where they maintain a large obituary file which is quite extensive. That email is:

My dad, Ronald Edward Fagan, was from Stanely Wisconsin -- as was his father Edward Fagan. My grandmother's name was Margaret.

Does anyone have any information/history about the Fagans?

My dad used to mention a Fagan Cheese Factory and a Fagan School.

My dad was born in Stanley in 1905, his parents were Pat and Annie Fagan. They sold their farm and moved to Duluth in about 1916. They had a large family, other children were Walter, Margaret, Lambert, Joseph, Jen, William, Frank, Cecelia.

I am doing some Thorpe family research and one of the things I want to know why some family members buried at the Stanley cemetery have spelled Thorp and other have spelled it Thorpe.

I was quite excited to see this mention of the Stanley Historical Society museum, and I will definitely visit the next time I come up to my home town of Thorp. Right now maybe some one can help me out. I received an old photo that on the back says Mr. and Mrs. Herman. I'm trying to figure out which of my ancestors it is. The picture looks like a post card and at the botttom it has Stanley, Wis. printed and in a fancy scroll is says SKUDE & HILER. which I am assuming is the photographer. The photo looks like it was taken around 1900 and could be a wedding picture although the woman is wearing a dark but fancy dress. The couple appears to be around 20 and are both wearing a coursage. Is there someone connected with the museum that would have knowledge of this photographer and when they were in business? Any help dating this photo would be helpful.  Thanks, Bob Herman

Bob, If you want to send us a scan of the Photo, we'd sure be happy to post it on the "Mystery Photos" page in hopes of nailing down additional information.

I think you will really enjoy the Stanley Museum. Be sure to visit the Library too as the Society has place a massive card index of obituaries and genealogical information there and of course it has more extensive hours.  Happy Hunting! Janet

Bob, Did you send that scan? I don't recall posting it. We just returned from vacation and I was going through some of my collected email and didn't see the picture. Perhaps I messed something up, or you have some questions I need to answer? I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. I have added the SKUDE & HILER photographers to the list and we'll be at the Thorp History Center again in December. Perhaps Janet & Don Rigolski (curators) will be able to shed some light on this mystery.  Janet

I would like to inform Margaret Fisk of my home address. I had asked for some copies on Huron Churches, etc. I hope she remembers which ones I had asked for, as without something to refer to, I can't remember them all now.

I would like to know if I can send a check. If she would, what it would cost for the copies and the cost of the postage to me.

Please inform me as to what that will be, and I will send a check immediately. Thanks, Rita

Hello, We are researching the surname of Swihart, in Stanley, circa 1890-1910. Opal L. Swihart was born March 1908 and was taken to Oregon about a year later. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Kathy
