Still Another Fatal Accident in the Woods

We are called upon again this week to record another of those items that have become too painfully frequent, "Killed in the woods." On Friday last, Highland Thomas, foreman in Chadwick’s camp, on Popple river, was instantly killed by a falling tree. He was standing about a hundred feet from the base of a tree that some of his men were engaged in falling, and but a moment before the tree fell, ordered a team that stood near to be driven further away, that there might be no chance of its being injured. He turned again to continue a conversation he was holding with Sheriff Brown, when the tree fell with a mighty crash, knocking another down which fell in the direction of the two men, the top knocking them both down. Though standing near enough together to touch each other, Mr. Brown was but slightly injured, while Mr. Thomas was killed by a large limb that struck him on the back of the neck. He never spoke of breathed after he was struck. His body was brought to this place, and his funeral, which was very largely attended, took place at the Methodist Church on Sunday.
