News: Ira Pope to the State Insane Asylum 1879

On Tuesday last, Sheriff Houston took Ira. B. Pope to the State Insane Asylum at Oshkosh, he having been adjudged insane by the proper parties. Since his defalcations as County Clerk of this county, and, indeed, since his election to that office, Pope has been a good deal of a wreck, first by wrong doing and afterwards by seeming remorse for his past course. After being brought back to this county from Minnesota, several years ago, and then saved from deserved and expected punishment by the leniency of the people, he quit drinking and underwent a real and thorough reform, and tried hard, working at anything he could find to do, to make a living. But without money or confidence and unfitted for physical labor by deformity at birth, he has had a sorry time of it, his troubles ending in mental aberration first noticeable several months ago and increasing until occasional sins of violence mad his incarceration necessary. AS his physical health seems to be good, his case is thought to be a curable one. Pope has wronged no single individual, and there are none here that would not be glad to see him restored to prosperity as well as reason.
