The officers of the Black River Railway Company have about closed the contract for ironing and operating a road, from this place to Merrillan, with the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway Company, wand work on the road will be commenced next week, provided sufficient assurance is received that funds for the completion of the work contracted by the party first mentioned will be forthcoming when the work is completed, of which there can be no reasonable doubt, as the farmers of the towns from which the expected aid must come fully realize that without a railroad to provide a market for their grain and other produce farming is this vicinity must hereafter prove a losing occupation, the time having passed when the lumbering interest provided a market for all and more than they could raise. With railroads passing directly through the lumbering districts formerly largely supplied by the farmers of this and adjoining towns, their supplies can now be obtained much cheaper from other localities, and if the farmers of this locality are to have a reliable market for their produce, it must be supplied by the building of this road.
