Ole Olson, a Norwegian, aged twenty-three (actually was 26 yrs. according to cemetery records) years, accidentally shot himself at a *deer-lick, about a mile east of Greenwood, last Sunday evening (21 Aug 1881). The accident was caused by a fool hardy attempt to draw a nail from a tree above him using the trigger-guard of the gun, a breech-loading rifle. In the attempt, the hammer of the gun was raised sufficient to explode the cap by the rebound and the ball entered his body near the pit of the stomach, penetrating the bladder and passing downward into the leg. Dr. Thomas has had charge of the case, and while there is little hope of his recovery, he has managed to keep him alive until the present date, Wednesday, and May bring him through.
*Deer-lick-- naturally or artificially salty area of ground where deer come to lick the salt.
