The History of the John S. Owen Lumber Company
John S. Owen's Saw Mill & Lumber Company
The John S. Owen Lumber Company founded the settlement of Owen, WI and gave it its name.
In 1892, the J. S. Owen Lumber Co.--originally the Rust-Owen Lumber Co., A Wisconsin logging firm headquartered in Eau Claire--surveyed the area around Brick Creek. John Owen Lumber Co. purchased 30,000 acres of that land because it was so conducive to milling due to the Popple River and the nearby railroad tracks and thick forests of virgin timber. Below is an early photo of the mill in Owen, Clark County, Wisconsin. I do not know what year it was taken.
