Free, Viola L. (12 September 1902 – 25 December 1980)

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, December 27, for Viola L. Free from the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. Mrs. Free, 78, passed away in Neillsville Memorial Home on Christmas Day. She had been a resident of the home since October; prior to that time she resided at 207 Hewett St.

The deceased was born on September 12, 1902, in Neillsville to William and Martha (Wegner) Free. After receiving her education, she worked at several jobs in the community. On January 23. 1923, she married Thomas Free in Neillsville ceremonies. The couple maintained their residence in the community.

Surviving her is one son, Robert, Neillsville; one daughter, Mrs. Milton (June) Schoenfeld, Neillsville; one sister, Mrs. Eva Quinlan, Neillsville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Irving.

The Rev. Gary Clark of the Neillsville United Church of Christ officiated at the services. Music at the service included “The 23rd Psalm” and “Nearer My God To Thee,” offered by Bob Ross and Jane Kessler. Serving as pallbearers were Donald Turner, Darrel Raine, Edward Zank, Emil Hauri, Arnold Carl and Orville Jake. Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Attending the services were friends and family from Black River Falls, Hixton, Withee, Granton, Humbird, and Osseo.
