(24 May 1892 - 4 May 1918) It is officially
reported that Peter C. Smith of Co. B, 503 Engineers Battalion,
died of meningitis, following mastoiditis, May 4, 1918. Peter Smith was
born May 24, 1892, in the town of Hull, Marathon, Co., Wis., where
he has always made his home. He was drawn into the army with the
first selective draft Sept. 19, 1917, and has been in France since
early in December. At the time of entering the army he was running
his mother's farm east of Colby, Wis., which charge he had since
the death of his brother, John, in Oct. 1916. He leaves to mourn
his his mother, Mrs. Minnie Smith, and brother, Paul, both of
Netherhill, Sask., Canada, and five sisters, Mrs. Ray Lafee, also
of Netherhill, Mrs. Edward Purkis of Oak Park, Ill., Mrs. Charles
Herzog of Sheboygan, Mrs. Oscar Stanisch and Miss Harriet of
Colby. He was one of our
finest specimens of young manhood and his early death is deeply
