News: Clark Republican & Press (15 Jan 1882)
Transcriber: Vickie ----Source: Family Records Date 1/15/1882 A boy named Erza
Wilcox was arrested last Monday for having sold intoxicating
liquors to Stephen Weeks, who had been posted among the prohibited
by the town authorities. The boy under arrest is a step-son of P.S.
Miller, and at times is behind the bar in his (Miller's) saloon. A
few weeks ago Weeks, the prohibited, got on a bender and in spite
of all that could be done kept it up until it was found necessary
in order to resore him to sobriety to take him to jail, which was
finally done. After keeping him there for a few days, he was
promised his liberty on the conditition that he would state where
he procured the liquor he had consumed during this particular
spree, which he finally did, his statement beeing that the boy
arrested was the quilty party, the modus operandi, by which the law
was to be evaded, being that of placing the whisky in a glass
behind the bar and allowing him to go in and help himself, by
exacting the amount necessary for the drink, whcih he was to
deposit in the same place (unbeknown, of course, to the seller) at
the time the drink was received. The examination was held yesterday
before Justice Sturdevant, who held the decision, to consult
authorities on some points raised in the case, until evening, when
the prisoner was dismissed. © Every submission is protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act
