Henkel, Alvina (16 DEC 1835 - 18 May 1926)

Mrs. Alvina Henkel, whose death was chronicled in the Phonograph last week, was buried in the Colby Cemetery Friday, May 21st, fitting services being held at the St. John's Evangelical Church, Rev. Wegner officiating.

The deceased was born Dec. 16, 1835, in Saxony, Germany, and died of old age, May 18, 1926, thus reaching the age of ninety years, 5 months and 2 days. She came to the U. S. in 1846 and went directly to Sheboygan, Wis. On March 6, 1859, she was married to John Henkel at Sheboygan, to which union five children were born, two of who, Gust Henkel of Colby, Wis. and Charles Henkel of Colby, Wis., are still living. She and her husband were early pioneers of this section, coming here in the spring of 1878.

Besides her two sons, her departure to the distant shore is mourned by a sister, Mrs. Louis Becherer of Colby, and twenty-two grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Those from out of town here for the funeral were E. A. Henkel of Milwaukee, Wis., Will Winkel, Park Falls, Wis., Ed Henkel, Loyal, Wis., and Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Phipps of Chippewa Falls, Wis.

After a long, busy and useful life, she died as she had lived, honored, trusted and loved. She reared her own monument while she lived in the hearts of all who knew her, but, on this memorable May day, an invisible hand waved a signal, and a voice in softest accent, announced that the gates were open and that God's angels were waiting to escort her in.
