(28 May 1848 - 16 Jan 1929) William Happle,
one of the old pioneers of Colby, Wis., passed away at the St.
Francis Hospital at La Cross, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 1929, after an
illness of two weeks, a slight stroke of paralysis and the flu
being the cause of his departure to the distant shore. Impressive
funeral services were held at the catholic Church Monday morning,
Jan. 21st, Rev. Lachnit officiating, and interment was made in the
Colby Catholic Cemetery. The deceased was
born in Germany May 28, 1848, thus reaching the age of eighty
years, seven months and nineteen days. He came to this country when
seven years of age and came to this locality (Colby, Wis.)
fifty-two years ago and resided on his farm one mile east of Colby
until about twenty years ago, when he moved to Colby. About a year
ago he moved to La Crosse. He was married to Margaret Eisert about
sixty years ago, to which union four children were born, one
preceding him in death. The children still living are Mrs. P. L.
Demmer, Centralia, Wash.; Peter Happle, Minneapolis; Mrs. Will
Harry, Colby. His wife died sixteen years ago. Those from out of
town here for the funeral were Mrs. P. L. Demmer, Centralia, Wash;
Adolph Demmer, Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Happle,
Minneapolis. Like most of our
early pioneers, the deceased united sound sense with strong
convictions, lived a fine Christian life and was highly respected
by all who know him. His life work is done, and well done, and now,
after life's duties and cares, he is at peaceful rest. © Every submission is protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act
